Viking settlement. Our 45 th anniversary
Another exciting day as we visit the world heritage site of L'Anse Meadows. Thanks to Dr. Helge Instad and his wife Annie Stine( an archaelogist) who in 1960 discouvered grassy mounds that turned out to be remmanants oh eight 11th century Norse buildings. We lucked out with our guide Clayton coldbourd a local who knew the Instads. He lived all his life in the area . We get a lot of first hand info. He takes us on a 45 min. walk as he explains the model site. Here the first European settlement in the new world where Viking explorer Leif Erickson landed 1,000 years ago. The site features Viking artifacts and reconstructed Scandinavian -style sod huts. We go inside a replica of the Viking longhouse where friends of the site in period dress guide us through Viking life 10 centuries ago. We even dawn Viking gear. There were some goose bump moments for sure. Their interpretive center had a very good video. A must see for sure. We move on to see more ice bergs, moose, wood stacks and gardens. We stop at some carving studios. I see 2 that I liked and will decide before we leave.
Sherri booked our flight to go to Vancouver Sept 10 and back sept 22 from Halifax
We drive to Pistoter Bay Provincial Park where an ecological reserve gives guided walks . Closed for today but opened at 9am tomorrow.
REMEMBER - Not all that roam are lost.
