July 14 Tuesday 2009
Gros Morne National Park -The Galapagos of geology.
We start out at the visitors center and find out it is to rain today but we decide to do the 2.5hr. Western Brock Pond boat ride. The ranger makes reservations for us for 1pm. We drive to Norris Point to check out the Marine science center- It is an aquarium. It didn't look that great so we move on to Rocky Point the sky gets very dark and we get a downpour. We are getting a little concerned as we have a 45min hike to do to get to the boat ride. We drive up to Lobster Cove and the rain stops so we get out and go into the lighthouse. Did we ever luck out as “Big Gloomy” does not live up to it's name. I pass a field of wild strawberries of coarse I have to have some. I hike down to the beach. Then we drive along the coast to West Brook Pond entrance passing small fishing communities along the way. We walk the 1.5 mile trail along a unique coastal bog and tuckamores ( stunted trees). There were lots of interpretive signs. the sun comes out. Some areas have a meandering board walk. We get there in time to have a hot dog. I feed the jays out of my hand. Awesome. I get prime seats on the left side of the upper deck with unobstructed 306' panoramic views. We look up at glacially cut cliffs of granite towering above us. This pre -Cambrian rock is some of the oldest on the Island. Wonderful waterfalls and rock formations everywhere you look. The trip up is with a guide sharing his knowledge of the area and Newfoundland tunes for the journey back to the dock. We return feeling we had a very full day. I go to the visitors center at 8pm. for a video by Dr Suzuki (sp) about water. I slept well.
REMEMBER-Blessed are the flexible, for they shall not get bent out of shape
