Heidelburg Germany

June 5 Wednesday 2013-Today we leave at 8:30 for a drive to Heidelberg Germany. Going South .A beautiful sunny day as I am wearing shorts. We travel a windy country road for a short time then onto a freeway. We pass fields of beautiful yellow canola ,rape seed. Our first pit stop the bathrooms are 70c with a 50c coupon if you buy something in the store. We need change for our big bills so we get an ice cream. Works out well. We arrive in Heidelberg at 11:30 we walk to the square to get the funiculai (a tram like train) to the top. Heidelburg wasn't bombed as it is a university town not industrial. It is on the river Neckar and has about 130,000 inhabitants. The university is the oldest and one of the most famous in Germany. Following world war II the city became headquarters for the united states forces in Europe. The castle is being renovated. There was a large moat around the castle. It also had a huge wine cellar with extra large barrels. Taxes at the time were paid with wine. The barrels had all kinds of wine mixed together. Next we go back to town and settle on the main square and have a beer before heading back. On our way back We are sitting in the front and I notice the driver yawning and opening his window and sure enough he is falling asleep. He is weaving all over the road. We quickly go and get Steve our leader to come up front and keep the driver awake. Our driver was smart enough to take a secondary road as there was an accident and the other bus had to wait an hour. We made it safely back. Still no definite word about what is happening on the boat as the water is still not low enough to go forward.
