September 6 Sunday 2009 Halifax
Today we spend the whole day at the Citadel. A great star shaped two stone walled fort on a big hill overlooking Halifax . A great review of Canadian military heritage and passage to nationhood. Since 1749 Citadel Hill has served as the site of four different forts. Todays fort took 28 years to complete. Finished in 1856. During 2 world wars the Citadel served as a sentinel on the home front. In 1952 the Citadel was declared a national historic site. We began with an hour period costumed guided tour. Then left to explore on our own with a very good guide map. We stop for lunch inside the Citadel. Very good and reasonable. We left after 5 hours an overload of history but very well done.
REMEMBER- The treasure you find is rarely what you thought you were looking for.
