August 20 Thursday 2009 Bras D'Or Cape Breton NS
Today we drive to Iona to tour the Nova Scotia's “New Scotland”. Here many thousands of Scottish highlanders emigrated to Cape Breton Island during the mid nineteenth century. The Highland Village museum takes us from 1790 replicas of the type of house lived in the highland and Islands of Scotland. We view a 1810 log house relocated to this site in 1970. We also see an original barn now housing the museum collection of carriages and farm implements. The Presbyterian church built in 1874. Another original. Services were first in Gaelic then English. A1917 school,1920 general store, a blacksmith shop and a 1900 house the most modern on the site. A carding mill where raw wool is prepared for spinning. All very interesting and informative. Next we drive out to Rita McNeil's tea room in Big Pond. We get caught in road construction and when we finally arrive the parking lot is full so we turn around and head back . We are still in a heat wave and are waiting to see what hurricane Bill will do as it is expected to hit Sydney on Sunday. A little scary.
