August 11 Tuesday 2009 Fortune to France-St Pierre by ferry
Rained all night and stopped around 10am but we took our umbrellas just in case. We get picked up at the park ($3.50 ea) for ride to ferry . We are on a package deal-for $163 ea we get a room, ferry ride (return) and breakfast. the ferry ride is an hour and a half. We get on the MV Arethusa. We pass Green Island a Canadian Is. That get involved in sea rescue and is solar powered. People take turns manning the barren island in shifts. Our first view of St Pierre is of tightly clustered colourful boxes that become houses as we propel close to shore. After departing the ship we first stop at the visitors center and get a city map and find out how to get to Hotel Robert. We check in then ask about a city tour and decide on one for Wednesday at 9am. Our room is sufficient and close to everything. We decide to walk the town. Up and down very narrow streets They do not make it easy as everything is in French . Many of the streets are not marked with street signs. Looking at the building one has no idea if it's a store ,a private home or a restaurant. Finally a young girt helps us and directs us to a good reasonable restaurant that the locals go to. Restaurants do not open until 7pm. We had dinner crepes(very good),1wine and 1 beer for $60. Very reasonable for St Pierre. We return to the hotel and go to bed early. A good day with good weather and lovely clean fresh air.
REMEMBER-Make peace with the past so it won't screw up the present.
