August 19 Wednesday 2009 Bras d'Or ,Cape Breton Island NS
still a heat wave. Grocery shopping is a must today as I have no fresh vegetables. After We get a late start but go to Baddeck where the Alexander Graham Bell museum site is. We toured the museum soaking up the history. We learn many things-He worked extensively teaching the deaf, including Helen Keller to speak. Both his mother and wife were deaf. He developed the audiometer to detect minor hearing problems. He invented and experimented in many realms including modulating sunlight to send messages wirelessly. He successfully tested a hydrofoil boat intended for anti-submarine warfare (1919)
The famous first telephone message ,”Come here Mr Watson, I need you” resulted when Bell spilled acid on his pants. He found a device to locate icebergs. We also learned that Bell was a founding member of National Geographic society.. the list goes on and on. Metal detector, alternative fuels and separating salt from water.
The main building striking architecture style is based on the tetrahedron, the geometric form Bell used in designing his passenger-carrying kite. There was a lot of hands on activities for children. All a little mind boggling.
Next we drive to St Anne where we attend another Ceilidh. This time the are serving seafood. $12 ea. This one was not as lively as the on in PEI but the food great ,starting with a large bowel of mussels each and other seafood favours. It didn't end until 9:45. We came out to rain ,lightening and thunder.
REMEMBER- A man without a purpose is like a ship without a rudder.
