Today we are off to Yarmouth - discouvered by Samuel Champlain 1604
We take the quick way, straight down hwy101. We arrive in 1.5 hr. We stop at the visitors center and get the walking tour ( 4k-2.4 mi) We see many 19th century mansions that show several architectural styles including Empire, Classic Revival. Queen Anne Revival, Gothic Revival, and Georgian. We see Alfred Fuller's Gothic Revival house ( the Fuller Brush co. ) Apparently there are 400 sea captains homes built between 1950 and 1900. Next we tour the waterfront gem, Sweeney fisherman's museum. The wharf and buildings are made of salvage material from the Yarmouth waterfront. It was built by the Sweeny family in a tribute to their way of life. A wonderful collection displayed with care and interest. A history going back 400 years. The lady at the museum recommended we go to Forchu lighthouse for lunch. So off we go. She recommended the lobster sandwich . It was delicious. Time to head back as we are taking the long scenic way back. (it takes us 3 hours) with stops at Smugglers Cove to see the caves used to store illicit goods before distributing them through the province. A wooden staircase descends a steep bank to a small protective cove. Our next stop was a church, Saint Marie the largest wooden church in North America and it is tall. The Saint Anne university is next door. St Bernard which took 30 years to complete and seats 1,000 people was also worth a look.
