November-16 Thursday 2009 Apache Junction
What a couple of days. Paul and Edith invite us to their place for overnight in Apache Junction just East of Phoenix. Our first stop is Canyon Lake then onto the Apache trail and Tortilla Flats. Over 100 years ago Tortilla flats was a thriving stage coach stop on the Apache trail. We go into the local bar. It is the first time Bill has had a beer at 10am, I have a coffee. This is quite a place dollar bills cover everything -wall and ceilings. Anaconda snake skin, and other strange memorabilia everywhere. The best was the bar stools- saddles. I found if difficult to get up on them . From Tortilla Flats the road winds up and down and around until the pavement ends. We descend to Fish Creek . Then we reach Apache trail vista camera time. We check out the marina with a restaurant, motel and campground. We also check out Burnt Creek Corral campground. Very pretty. Nice sites with good views. Next Roosevelt Dam , a 2 story building is dwarfed by it's 280 feet height. The largest masonry dam in the world. Back to pavement and continue the circle to Miami and Globe and Apache Junction. Home to a delicious salmon dinner after wonderful jalipino peppers stuffed with chicken barbecued YUM YUM .
